A Tree Trunk is Like a Spine

Some thoughts

  • Living with scoliosis means that sometimes I have to deal with sciatica. The last two weeks it’s been raging and the pain has left me both grumpy and a little curious as to how I can make sense of the discomfort and if it can fuel my creative practice in some way.

  • I am now studying part-time at a lovely organisation called Art Pocket and the current theme for our work is ‘Corporeal’. This feels like a coincidence and an opportunity.

  • I realised that being both a photographer and a podcaster I can use both my camera and microphone for research as well as for making.

  • Books have spines. I love books - so much so that I don’t have enough shelf space to house them all and they live in random piles in my bedroom. A totem of books is like a spine.

  • A tree trunk is like a spine.

  • My niece Jazzy came over and I took photos of her resting uneasily against a tree. I want to know what the spine can and cannot do.

  • This is an exploration.

  • My back still hurts but I am excited about what I will discover.
